We Mourn the Loss of Professor John G. Day
JOHN GRANT DAY
Friday afternoon, January 31, our beloved friend and colleague John Day died after a brief illness. John was an honored and valued member of the UConn Law School Community. He joined the law school faculty as a Professor in Residence in 1999 and had been a linchpin of the Insurance Law Center ever since. Before coming to the Law School, he had had an illustrious career in the private sector, government, and academia, including posts as Assistant to the Vice Chairman of the Federal Power Commission, Special Counsel to the U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Deputy Superintendent of the New York Insurance Department, Insurance Commissioner for the Commonwealth of Virginia, Of Counsel with Steptoe & Johnson in Washington, D.C., and Visiting Associate Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto, Canada. He capped off his career at CIGNA Corporation in Bloomfield, where he was Senior Vice President and Chief Counsel for insurance, healthcare benefits, pensions and investment law.
The last course that John taught was on the Affordable Care Act and health reform, in the spring of 2013. His course was extremely popular with students and that meant the world to John. He became so immersed in the topic that he spent his last months writing an assessment of the Act, seeking input from our faculty and others around the country. He completed the revised draft less than three weeks before he died.
John will be remembered for his engagement with ideas until the end and for his incredible generosity to his students, his colleagues, and his friends and family. Here at the Center, we will miss him terribly and he will live on in our hearts.
Contributions in John's memory may be made to Granby Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 617, Granby, CT 06035 or the St. Francis Foundation, 95 Woodland St., Hartford, CT 06105. For online condolences please visit, www.carmonfuneralhome.com. A memorial service is planned.
